Collins, King Announce More than $1.6 Million in Grant Funding to Support School Improvement in Maine

WASHINGTON, D.C. – U.S. Senators Susan Collins and Angus King today announced that the U.S. Department of Education is awarding $1,663,407 in school improvement grant funding to the State of Maine. This funding will allow the state to award competitive subgrants to school districts that demonstrate the greatest need for funds and the strongest commitment to raising student achievement in low-performing schools.

“Teachers and administrators in Maine’s school districts work hard every day to ensure our young people receive a quality education, but they need adequate resources to succeed in that mission,” said Senators Collins and King in a joint statement. “We are pleased that the U.S. Department of Education is making this investment in the future of Maine schools. By helping schools that are hard-pressed for resources, this funding will also help to build Maine’s next generation of leaders.”

This funding comes through the U.S. Department of Education’s School Improvement Grants (SIG) program. Since 2009, the SIG program has provided more than $7 billion in grants to support more than 1,800 of the country’s schools that have demonstrated the greatest need and the strongest commitment to raising student achievement. More information on the SIG program is available HERE.

Maine is one of 16 states receiving the SIG grants announced by the U.S. Department of Education today.
