WASHINGTON, D.C. – U.S. Senator Susan Collins, Chairman of the Transportation, Housing and Urban Development Appropriations Subcommittee, and U.S. Senator Angus King, announced that the U.S. Department of Transportation has awarded $1,014,117 to the Greenville Municipal Airport.  The funding, which was awarded through the Federal Aviation Administration’s (FAA) Airport Improvement Program, will help construct a parallel taxiway.

“Maine’s regional airports boost the economy, connect communities, and serve as fundamental components of our state’s transportation system,” said Senators Collins and King in a joint statement.  “This investment for the Greenville Municipal Airport will enhance safety and help ensure that the airport can continue to support the Moosehead region.”

The grant will help fund the construction of a 4,700 foot taxiway parallel to the main runway in order to separate aircraft that are taxiing and taking off.  Currently, aircraft share the same runway for taxiing and taking off, which town officials view as a serious safety concern.

Last month, Senators Collins and King joined with Representative Bruce Poliquin in writing a letter to the FAA supporting the Town of Greenville’s grant application.
