WASHINGTON D.C. – U.S. Senators Susan Collins and Angus King today announced that the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) has awarded over $4.5 million in grants to help reduce veterans’ homelessness in Maine. These funds will have a direct impact on hundreds of veterans in the state through the work of organizations including the Community Action Partnership, Veterans Inc., and Preble Street. The grants are provided by the Supportive Services for Veterans Families (SSVF) program which works in collaboration with the VA to promote housing stability by providing services such as mental health care and temporary financial assistance.
“These funds are welcome news for Maine veterans and their families,” said Senators Collins and King in a joint statement. “Maine is home to one of the highest percentage of veterans per capita, and we have an obligation to provide these courageous men and women, who have sacrificed so much to protect our freedoms, with the most comprehensive and accessible assistance programs available. The SSVF grants announced today will make a significant contribution to that effort and undoubtedly help hundreds of at-risk and low income veterans in Maine improve the stability of their living situation.”
