Collins, King Announce Environmental Award for Portsmouth Naval Shipyard

WASHINGTON, D.C. -- U.S. Senators Susan Collins and Angus King today announced that the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard (PNSY) received a leadership award from the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) for its outstanding environmental record.  According to the EPA, since the 1990s, PNSY has been an environmental leader in the region, acting as an early EPA partner on pollution prevention and mercury reduction efforts.  In the past year, PNSY has undertaken projects that promote energy efficiency, waste diversion, and LEED buildings, and established a public transportation bus route for employees, which saves 11,500 gallons of fuel per year.

"Not only is the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard the gold-standard for public shipyards when it comes to submarine repair and worker safety, but it is also an environmental leader that has set the example for other shipyards and installations for best practices in energy efficiency and reducing its environmental footprint.  We congratulate the Shipyard's leadership and employees for this well-deserved recognition," said Senators Susan Collins and Angus King in a joint statement.
