WASHINGTON, D.C. – U.S. Senators Susan Collins and Angus King announced today that the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) has awarded $500,000 to the Aroostook Band of Micmacs through USDA Rural Development’s Community Facilities Direct Loan Program. The funding will be used to construct a two-story, multifunction facility in Presque Isle that will provide space for important tribal programs.
“Investing in infrastructure for the Aroostook Band of Micmacs ensures that the tribe can provide programs crucial to the community,” said Senators Collins and King in a joint statement. “We applaud the USDA for supporting Maine tribes like the Aroostook Band of Micmacs and helping to strengthen our rural communities.”
The Presque Isle facility will include housing, realty, and assets programs; Head Start; and programs for youth and seniors. In addition, the construction project will include road, water, sewer, and electrical upgrades and a new paved parking area.
USDA Rural Development programs provide grants and loans to assist economic expansion and job creation. Funds are directed towards infrastructure improvement, business development, homeownership, community services, public safety, and broadband access in rural areas across the country.
