WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today, U.S. Senators Susan Collins and Angus King announced that the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) has awarded $392,463 to Mount Desert Island Biological Laboratory to support innovative research for the treatment of several diseases including heart disease, Alzheimer’s, and Parkinson’s.
“The researchers at MDI Biological Laboratory are working tirelessly to expand our understanding of diseases and strategies to advance modern medicine,” said Senators Collins and King in a joint statement. “This funding will support the laboratory as it strives to develop medications and treatments for diseases affecting countless Americans and their families every day.”
Ongoing research at the Mount Desert Island Biological Laboratory examines how proteins are regulated and what happens when mutations in those proteins occur. This grant will enable researchers to further efforts to understand these mutations and the diseases they cause, thereby aiding scientists in the development of new drugs to treat various diseases.
The grant funding has been awarded through the National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases, one of the 27 institutes that combine to form the National Institutes of Health (NIH). The NIH is an agency of the Department of Health and Human Services.
