Collins, King Announce $224,999 Grant for Maine Company to Improve Physical Mobility

WASHINGTON, D.C. – U.S. Senators Susan Collins and Angus King today announced that the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) has awarded $224,999 to the R.M. Beaumont Corporation in Brunswick to develop a stylized adaptive mobility and fitness device that would help those who are less mobile move more easily outside.

“Everyone, regardless of age or ability, deserves to enjoy the great outdoors, especially in a beautiful state like Maine,” Senators Collins and King said in a joint statement. “R.M. Beaumont and the University of Maine’s innovative concept to develop a walking aid holds the potential to help make that dream a reality, which is why we are pleased that HHS will provide critical support for this pioneering idea.”

Founded in 2006, R.M. Beaumont Corporation specializes in a wide-range of prototype-stage devices, systems and structures. The company partnered with the University of Maine to develop this project, which is titled AFARI: A Stylized Adaptive Mobility and Fitness Device for Outdoor Movement. The funding has been awarded through the National Institute on Aging, one of 27 institutes that combine to form the National Institutes of Health (NIH). The NIH is an agency of the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS).
