WASHINGTON, D.C. – U.S. Senators Susan Collins (R-Maine) and Angus King (I-Maine) announced today the United States Department of Health and Human Services’ Administration for Children and Families has awarded the York County Community Action Corporation $1,308,121 for their Head Start and Early Head Start projects.

“Head Start gives young children and families in Maine the tools they need to succeed,” said Senators Collins and King in a joint statement. “By expanding access to early childhood education, we are building a foundation of opportunity for Maine children and encouraging a will to learn. York County Community Action Corporation helps to strengthen Maine communities and support our state’s working families, and this federal grant money allows them to continue in their important work.”

The York County Community Action Corporation helps alleviate and solve poverty for the people of York County by assisting families and seniors within the York County community. York County Community Action Corporation helps to administer economic stability programs such as Head Start, Low-Income Home Energy Assistance, and WIC.

Head Start was established in 1965 to promote school readiness and provide a comprehensive array of health, nutritional, and social services to eligible four- and five-year-old preschoolers and their families. Head Start services include early learning, health, and family well-being. The Office of Head Start (OHS), an office with the Administration for Children and Families, administers grant funding and oversight to the local agencies that provide Head Start services in Maine and across the country.
