WASHINGTON, D.C. – Following an announcement by the U.S. Coast Guard that it will suspend the search for survivors of the El Faro at sunset today, U.S. Senator Angus King (I-Maine) released the following statement:
“I am deeply saddened that no survivors have been found. Like everyone in Maine, my thoughts and prayers are with the family, friends, and loved ones of the El Faro’s crew members. My heart goes out to them and to the Maine Maritime Academy community during this tremendously difficult time. I hope in the days ahead we may find comfort and solace in our continued support of one another,” Senator King said.
“I would also like to express my gratitude to the men and women of the U.S. Coast Guard for their tireless efforts this week. I have spoken with Rear Admiral Buschman and will continue to remain in contact with the Coast Guard and the National Transportation Safety Board as we try to find out more information about this terrible tragedy.”
At a news conference this afternoon, the U.S. Coast Guard announced that it would suspend the search for the missing crew of the El Faro at sunset today. The Coast Guard announced on Monday that it believes the 790-foot cargo ship sank as a result of encountering Hurricane Joaquin on its way from Jacksonville, Florida to San Juan, Puerto Rico.
Prior to this afternoon’s announcement, Senator King was briefed by search and rescue leader Rear Admiral Scott A. Buschman, the Commander of the Seventh Coast Guard District headquartered in Miami, Florida.
